Darjeeling has a festival happening somewhere in town during at least nine months of the year. Most travellers never check for this before booking, because the trip gets planned around Tiger Hill sunrises and tea garden walks instead. Then they land in the middle of Losar or Tihar and wonder why the streets look different from the photos online. This Darjeeling festival guide will help you understand what is actually happening month by month.

Some Darjeeling tour packages have included not only Darjeeling tourist places but also local festivals. You can experience the meeting point of nature and culture.

The Famous Festivals in Darjeeling

This table will help you understand the different festivals celebrated in Darjeeling:

Month Festivals in Darjeeling What It Involves
January Maghe Sankranti Locals bathe in the river at dawn and cook traditional food
March Losar Days of monastery processions, cham dances, and chanting
May Buddha Purnima Lamp lighting and prasad at the Mahabodhi Temple

January: Maghe Sankranti

Maghe Sankranti falls around the second week of January, on the same solar shift that gives us Makar Sankranti across the rest of India. Nepali and Lepcha families head to the Teesta river for a bath, then come home to cook til and chura. If you are touring Tiger Hill or Batasia Loop during this traditional festival in Darjeeling, some shops may open later than usual.

March: Losar

Losar runs on the Tibetan lunar calendar. Therefore, this Darjeeling festival is celebrated sometimes in February and sometimes in March. Always check the exact date before planning a trip. Ghum Monastery, Bhutia Busty, and Dali Monastery all hold cham dances and prayer sessions that stretch across two or three days.

May: Buddha Purnima

Buddha Purnima falls on a full moon. Therefore, the date can shift each year, but it is generally celebrated in May. You can visit the Mahabodhi Temple. It stays open through the day for lamp lighting and prasad.

August: Teej

Teej is a fasting day for Nepali women, and some skip even water throughout the day. The Mahakal Temple area fills up by afternoon as women gather in red sarees for the puja. So, if you are not there for the festival itself, give yourself extra time near Mall Road.

September to October: Durga Puja and Dasain

Durga Puja comes before Dasain. It is a Bengali festival where they worship Maa Durga. Dasain is celebrated two weeks later, and it is a big festival for the Nepalese. That means some shops, taxis, and smaller restaurants run limited hours for four or five days straight.

November: Tihar and Diwali

Tihar is celebrated for five days. Each day is dedicated to something different, like dogs, cows, etc. On the final day, Bhai Tika is set aside for brothers and sisters. Diwali lighting covers Mall Road and Chowk Bazaar during this week. However, firecrackers are restricted in some parts.

December: Christmas

Among all winter festivals in Darjeeling, Christmas is the best. Christmas in Darjeeling has a genuinely local feel. The chilly weather and snowy view make the place apt for Christmas. Also, Mall Road stays lit through the whole month, so you can visit any day to enjoy the vibe.
